Kota Kinabalu in Malaysia has everything for everyone. Many consider it as one of the best cities to go on vacation in Southeast Asia. It is a modern, high-tech city with very friendly people, and topnotch tourist attractions, which include tropical rainforests, white-sand beaches and cultural landmarks. The icing on the cake is its tropical weather. Weather in Kota Kinabalu is warm, soothing and very inviting.

Located on the northwestern coast of Borneo facing the South China Sea, Kota Kinabalu or more easily referred to as KK is the capital city of the Malaysian state of Sabah. The city proper has a total population of about 620,000 but the wider urban area has a population of about 900,000. This is the biggest urban area in Sabah and the 6th biggest in Malaysia. In addition to its beaches, coral reefs, and lush rainforests, KK’s leading and most important tourist destination is the Kinabalu National Park, which includes the 4,000-m high Mount Kinabalu. The park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is home to more than 4,500 species of flora and fauna, including 100 mammal and 326 bird species. It is one of the most frequently visited spots in Malaysia, receiving hundreds of thousands of visitors every year. Alongside KK’s natural attractions is its speedy development as a modern city. KK is clearly one of the major commercial and industrial centers in Eastern Malaysia. Foreigners on business and leisure trips typically talk of two amazing cities in Malaysia – KL or Kuala Lumpur, the capital city, and KK or Kuta Kinabalu.

Malaysia sits very near on top of the equator while the southern tip of Sabah extends below it. The climate is basically tropical, although it never gets really hot compared with other Asian countries. Malaysia experiences tropical weather, but the best part is that it is never too hot here. Annual average temperature range is a mild 20°C to 30°C, but it can be way cooler on the highlands. Humidity is always high since it is along sea waters. Just like any other tropical Asian country, Malaysia experiences just two seasons – the dry and wet seasons. On the east coast, the wet season begins in October and runs through February, while rain falls on the west coast from September to December. Overall, Malaysian weather is warm and pleasant all year round; it never gets freezing cold or burning hot.

In the island state of Sabah located south of mainland Malaysia, heavy rains and occasional storms arrive from November to January. After that, February to April is relatively dry due to the incoming Pacific Ocean winds. The nearby islands of the Philippines shield Sabah from most of the stronger cyclones that yearly hit the Philippines and Taiwan, which is why Sabah is often referred to as the “Land below the Wind”.

Meanwhile, there is plenty of rain in Kota Kinabalu in the months of April to January. The warmest month is July, the coolest is January (KK is on the cooler part of Sabah), the wettest is October and the driest is March. There’s no saying which month is the best time to visit KK; weather in Kota Kinabalu is predictable and its appropriateness to the city’s tourism depends on what a tourist is looking for, and KK has plenty of attractions to offer. In other words, the weather could not dampen the beauty and allure of this amazing city.
